What’s Actually Happening to Your Plants in Summer Heat — And What to Do About It

If your garden is looking a little rough in July, you’re in good company.

Every summer, gardeners across the country watch their plants wilt, stop blooming, drop buds, and generally look like they’re giving up — and wonder what they did wrong. Most of the time the answer is nothing. What you’re seeing isn’t failure. It’s biology.

Understanding what’s actually happening to your plants in summer heat changes how you respond to it. And often the most important thing to know is when to act and when to simply leave things alone.

Here’s the full picture.

What Heat Actually Does to a Plant

Plants make their energy through photosynthesis — absorbing sunlight and carbon dioxide and converting it into sugars that fuel growth and flowering. It’s a beautifully efficient system, right up until temperatures get too high.

Most common garden plants — perennials, annuals, vegetables, and shrubs — photosynthesize most efficiently between 65°F and 75°F. Above that range, the system starts to strain. Above about 85 to 90°F, something significant happens.

To slow water loss in intense heat, plants close the tiny pores in their leaves called stomata. This is a survival mechanism — the plant is protecting itself from dehydration. But closing the stomata also means stopping the intake of carbon dioxide. No CO₂ means photosynthesis slows or stops entirely. The plant is now in survival mode rather than growth mode.

This is why your plants can look so defeated on a hot July afternoon even when you’ve been watering faithfully. They’re not dying — they’re coping. And knowing the difference matters enormously.

The Signs Worth Paying Attention To — And the Ones to Leave Alone

Not all summer plant stress looks the same. Here’s how to read what you’re seeing.

 

Midday wilting that recovers by evening

This is the most common summer garden alarm that turns out to be a false one. If your plants are drooping between noon and 4pm but perk back up as the evening cools, you’re likely seeing a normal temporary heat response. The plant closed its stomata, reduced water loss, and is rehydrating overnight as root uptake resumes.

Before you reach for the hose, push your finger two inches into the soil. If it feels damp, the wilting is probably temporary and the plant doesn’t need more water. NC Cooperative Extension puts it clearly: if soil is moist at depth, the wilting is heat stress, not drought.

One important exception: this “wait and see” approach works well for established perennials and shrubs. For annuals, vegetables, and containers — the plants most of us are growing on our decks and patios — repeated daily wilting even with evening recovery is worth taking more seriously. These plants don’t have the deep root systems to buffer heat stress as effectively. Check the soil and water if it’s dry.

Brown crispy leaf edges

Typically heat scorch. Cosmetic damage that looks alarming but usually isn’t fatal. The plant will recover when temperatures drop.

 

Dropped buds or stopped blooming

The plant is conserving energy. This is frustrating but temporary. Most plants resume blooming when conditions improve.

 

Persistent wilt that doesn’t recover overnight

This is when to act. Check for pests, disease, or severely compacted root-bound conditions, especially in containers.

 

What to Do for Containers

Containers are the most vulnerable plants in your garden during a heat wave — and the ones that need the most attention.

Unlike in-ground plants, a container has a small amount of soil exposed to heat on all sides. Root temperatures can get dangerously high, especially in dark-colored plastic pots sitting in direct afternoon sun. The soil dries out dramatically faster than in-ground beds, sometimes going bone dry in under 12 hours on a very hot day.

A few practical moves that genuinely help:

  • Move pots if you can. If you have containers in afternoon sun, shifting them to a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade during a heat wave makes a real difference. Morning sun is gentler and the plants have time to photosynthesize before the heat peaks.
  • Water in the morning. This allows moisture to reach the roots before the hottest part of the day and gives plants the hydration they need going into the heat. If the soil is dry by evening, water again.
  • Use the finger test. Push your finger an inch or two into the soil. If it feels dry, water thoroughly — until water flows freely from the drainage holes. That’s the signal the whole root zone has been reached, not just the surface.
  • Don’t fertilize a bone-dry container. Water thoroughly first. Fertilizing stressed, dry roots can cause fertilizer burn. Let the soil be moist before feeding.

What to Do for In-Ground Beds

In-ground plants have far more insulation and resilience than containers — deep soil buffers temperature swings, and established root systems can reach moisture well below the surface. But they still struggle in sustained heat.

Deep, infrequent watering beats daily shallow watering every time. A thorough soaking once or twice a week sends water deep into the soil, encouraging roots to grow downward where it’s cooler and moisture is more stable. Light daily watering keeps roots shallow and plants dependent. 

Mulch is your most powerful tool in July. A 3-inch layer of mulch over your beds insulates the soil, holds moisture, and keeps root temperatures significantly cooler. Resist the urge to prune heat-stressed plants. A plant that looks rough in July heat is often conserving resources. Cutting it back adds additional stress on top of what it’s already managing. Wait until temperatures drop and the plant shows signs of recovery before tidying it up.

What to Simply Leave Alone

This might be the most Relaxed Gardener section of the post — because sometimes the right answer is nothing.

Some plants simply sulk in summer heat and there is genuinely nothing to do except wait. Impatiens get leggy and stop blooming in peak heat. Fuchsia can look nearly dead in July and come roaring back when temperatures ease. Some hydrangeas go limp midday every single day in summer and recover every evening. Pansies planted in spring will decline — they’re cool season plants doing exactly what cool season plants do when summer arrives.

Knowing which category your struggling plant falls into saves a lot of unnecessary intervention, wasted water, and worry.

The rule of thumb: if it was thriving before the heat arrived and it’s a plant known to be heat-sensitive, wait it out. If it was struggling before the heat wave too, look more carefully.

 

The Bigger Picture

Your garden in July is not the garden of May and June. The light is more intense, the temperatures are higher, and the plants are working harder just to survive. A garden that looks a little tired in midsummer is a normal garden, not a failing one.

Do what you can in the cooler parts of the day. Water deeply and less often where you can. Mulch everything. Move containers out of the worst afternoon heat if possible.

And then step back. Trust the plants. Most of them have been doing this far longer than we have. 🌿
